Tips for Maintaining Resilient Flooring

Your flooring may be durable, but it still needs attention. Just like your car or any asset with value, it requires regular maintenance to make sure it stays that way. The following floor care tips will help protect your investment in the long run (and walk!).

• Develop a maintenance plan and stick to it. Train your maintenance team how to care for your specific flooring surfaces. Then work only with maintenance teams who are properly trained in the upkeep of that particular flooring material.
• Clean high-traffic areas frequently.
• Map out a “cleaning route” that keeps the cleaning staff moving forward and not backtracking. This reduces the chance of spreading debris onto already cleaned surfaces and saves time as each surface gets one pass.
• Make sure your cleaning routine includes a combination of vacuuming, dry mopping, and removing dirt with pH neutral cleaners.
• Avoid harsh chemical cleaners as they compromise indoor air quality and harm flooring finishes.
• Use microfiber mops if possible. They remove more soil more easily than traditional mops. Don’t shake the mop while cleaning, as it will spread debris particles. Also don’t allow dirt to become ground into the floor. It will damage the flooring finish.
• Placemats in high-traffic areas to trap dirt then clean or swap out the mats often.
• Avoid sliding heavy furniture across the floor, which will cause scratches. Instead, lift the pieces of furniture, and use pads to prevent dents.
